Day 4- Exploring Tokyo, a team borderless experience, Shibuya and don quixote madness
Day 4:
東京での最後の日、買い物をしましょう
And on Sunday, the sun has decided to rest again. We woke up to clouds and a steady drizzle. That didn’t dampen our spirits though. We didn’t have much planned.
The interesting thing for us during our time in the Capital is the lack of souvenirs, you know the touristy magnets, frames, t-shirts and hoodies. Nothing like that has been found anywhere, in fact, there’s only 1 place we were able to get postcards at. But don’t mind me on my inability to buy junk.
First up for the day is 1 of 3 interactive museums located here in Japan by the teamLab group. There’s Borderless, which is the one I selected, Gardens (outdoors) and Planets - which is very touchy and using your senses. Tickets sell out fast, and like everything else in Japan, you have to make reservations and/or book months in advance. I got these back in January .
Back on the train for a 25 minute ride to the museum. It was mind blowing. You definitely don’t see that anywhere else in the world. It’s such a visually sensory overload, you really become one with the art.
It morphs in front of you, the colors, shapes, and sound. Disappearing from one room, and reappearing in another. So glad we got to experience this.
After regrouping, we walked outside to reset our mind and body. Dan described it as euphoric yet he felt nauseous. I could relate as one of the rooms almost triggered my vertigo, but I was so happy.
Anyway, the 7 minute walk was to the Tokyo Tower. It’s a radio tower built in the 1950s, orange and white, and looks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. We didn’t go up, but it’s definitely beautiful, especially at night.
We now wanted to try one last time at finding those Tokyo trinkets we desperately wanted. What better place? The mega Don Quijote store in Shibuya, 8 floors. Think dollar tree meets Walmart meets target meets the flea market. It has everything.
Well, almost everything, just not the stuff we wanted. But what did we find? Wasabi kit-kats, chips, and magnets. Woo hoo! they at least allowed us to show our passports and get the tax-free discount.
One last spot, then out of the Shibuya madness and back to the hotel. What Hard Rock is for me, Dan has H&M. And he found his mothership.
Shopped and bought a few things, jumped on the train, then we chilled at the hotel for a quick couple of hours. But, dinner called, and said you two need to eat. A lot. And where else? Somewhere you can no longer eat in the states. TGI Fridays!!! The buffalo tenders were Deelightful.
And just like that, our time in Tokyo is complete. It’s clean, efficient, beautiful, complex, chaotic, mesmerizing, and incredibly advanced technologically. We mastered the train system, visited temples, saw the sakura and battled your weather elements. Even with people everywhere, your inhabitants are the kindest and most polite I’ve ever encounteted in any city. Thank you for the memories, we can wait to visit again.
Step count for the day was 18,027 and 8.12 miles.
Next on the itinerary, Disneyland.
